Football pitch lighting: Learn how to choose the best luminaires

Lighting a football pitch is so important that it depends on the type of match that is going to be played and will have to follow specific regulations. Not all the luminaires on the market are going to be the same, each one has its own characteristics. In addition, it will be necessary to know if we also want to have a warmer or cooler light.

On the other hand, when it comes to making an investment like this, we have to bear in mind that we are talking about systems that require quite a lot of power. With the current price of electricity, looking at the lighting that is going to help you save on your bill will also be a relief.

Do you want to know how to choose the one that best suits your football pitch? Read on to find out.

Lighting regulations

The reason for having specific regulations when configuring the lighting in a football stadium is to avoid possible glare during matches, both for players and spectators. Therefore, the luminaire we choose must provide uniform light and avoid flickering. We recommend installing LED spotlights, as due to the consumption they will have to illuminate the entire surface, we will be able to make significant savings compared to traditional ones.

For this, FIFA dictates rules depending on whether the match is national or international and if it is going to be televised.

For training sessions, for example, it is recommended to have four poles with class III luminaires. If we are going to move on to a regional match, six poles and class II lighting will be sufficient. However, if a national or international match is to be played, class I is required.

Televised matches must also take into account that there can be no shaded areas, the entire football pitch must be uniformly lit.

With regard to light uniformity, UEFA requires that it should be 0.5 to 0.7 in a ratio of 0 to 1, which will give us the degree of light distribution.

Titan floodlights

Titan floodlights are a great choice for lighting football stadiums and large venues. They have a high homogeneous power and the possibility to adjust their orientation. They also have a large number of optics, achieving perfect illumination even in the most demanding spaces.

In addition, thanks to the control systems they have and the bidirectional telemetry, they allow the user to have all the information instantly about the real time, the conditions in which the luminaire is and even to be able to switch it on, switch it off, regulate its power or programme the modes. All of these are advantages because, in the event of any incident, it will be known practically immediately and will allow a quicker and better reaction, knowing where to act.

On the other hand, the Titan projectors are configured in such a way that if the user needs to switch them off in stages, they can do so without any problem, with the different power settings available for each one.

Types of Titan optics

  • Intensive symmetrical optics: They give a 10° beam of light, designed to illuminate specific points where there is a need for greater focus.
  • Semi-intensive symmetric optics: It increases to 30° and is recommended for semi-focused illumination of certain objects. Compared to the intensive symmetric, it has a larger area of influence.
Symmetrical extensive optics: Thanks to the 60° of illumination, we can illuminate medium-sized areas of a surface.
Symmetrical extensive optics: They are also used to illuminate medium-sized areas or fields, but their range of action is greater thanks to their 90° of light beam.

At NTE Sistemas we are experts in lighting, so our consultants will be able to guide you through the process of choosing the luminaire that best suits your football pitch.
